Podcast strategy

strategy & positioningreviewed by the Fame team · 25 June 2026

The plan that defines why a podcast exists, who it's for, what it covers and how success is measured - before a single episode is recorded. It connects the show to a business goal and to a specific audience of buyers.

For example, before launch a fintech team writes a one-page strategy: the show targets Heads of Finance at mid-market firms, covers the messy realities of scaling a finance function, books one target-account guest a month, and is measured on influenced pipeline and guest-to-opportunity rate.

Why it matters: without a strategy a podcast drifts into a content checkbox that nobody can justify. A clear strategy keeps every episode pointed at the right listener and a real business outcome, which is what separates shows that drive pipeline from shows that quietly get cancelled.

what good looks like

A real strategy can name the buyer, the business outcome, the guests you will pursue, and how clips reach those buyers, before a single episode is recorded.

common mistakes
  • Starting to record before defining who it is for and why.
  • Confusing a content calendar with an actual strategy.
  • Setting no commercial goal, so the show drifts and dies.
common questions
What is a podcast strategy?

The plan that defines why a podcast exists, who it's for, what it covers and how success is measured - before a single episode is recorded. It connects the show to a business goal and to a specific audience of buyers.

What should a B2B podcast strategy include?

At minimum: the business goal, the target listener (your ICP), the show's positioning and topics, the format and cadence, the guest plan, the promotion plan, and the metrics you'll judge it on.

How long should I commit before judging a podcast?

Plan for at least 6-12 months. Podcasts compound - the back catalogue, audience and guest relationships build slowly, then pay off, so judging after a handful of episodes is the most common mistake.
